Success in the making

The Learning Trust has been making success in Hackney since 2002, when it entered into a ten-year contract with the London Borough of Hackney to provide education services for the borough. Here are just some of the things we’ve achieved in that time…

2010

• Hackney’s 14-19 results make it the most improved in the country at Key Stage 4 and the second most improved (per student) at Post-16
• BSF work completed at Stoke Newington School and Clapton Girls’ Technology College

2009

• City Academy opens
• Hackney’s GCSE results pass above the national average for the first time
• More than 1,500 pupils take part in the largest inclusive sports schools events in the country
• 67 per cent of students achieve 5 or more GCSEs at A*-C

2008

• More than 4,000 children perform in the 11th annual Hackney Schools Music Festival
• A £2.6m Play Pathfinder scheme is launched to provide new adventure playgrounds and exciting and innovative play areas for children and young people in the borough
• 56 per cent of students achieve 5 or more GCSEs at A*-C

2007

• Bridge Academy opens
• Hackney students are among the first in the country to choose Diplomas
• The Learning Trust is awarded the national matrix quality kitemark for Education Advice and Guidance
• Words Unite, a community-wide campaign is launched to Get Hackney Reading. The year-long project led by The Learning Trust and funded by Team Hackney aims to encourage adults, children and young people throughout the borough to become enthusiastic, independent and inquiring readers.
• 54 per cent of students achieve 5 or more GCSEs at A*-C

2006

• Petchey Academy opens
• 14 integrated children’s centres are approved, offering education, health and social services under one roof for children and their parents
• 50 per cent of students achieve 5 or more GCSEs at A*-C

2005

• The Hackney school students’ Trailblazer programme is launched to recognise young people who have broken barriers and achieved excellence
• Yesoday Hatorah becomes Hackney’s first Orthodox Jewish school to join the maintained sector
• Springfield Primary School opens
• 47 per cent of students achieve 5 or more GCSEs at A*-C

2004

• Mossbourne Community Academy opens
• Hackney’s £167m Building Schools for the Future (BSF) programme is announced
• 45 per cent of students achieve 5 or more GCSEs at A*-C

2003

• Chair of The Learning Trust Sir Mike Tomlinson publishes a major report into the future of 14-19 education
• 39 per cent of students achieve 5 or more GCSEs at A*-C

2002

• The Learning Trust is launched – the first not-for-profit private company to run educational services for an entire borough
• Hackney’s Safer Schools Partnership is launched for all Hackney secondary schools
• 31 per cent of students achieve 5 or more GCSEs at A*-C
