Hackney’s trailblazing students visit the House of Lords

‘Trailblazer’ pupils from ten Hackney secondary schools had afternoon tea at the House of Lords last week. The party was attended by notable public figures and celebrities, who took part in table discussions with the students to come up with lists of the ‘ingredients’ they felt contributed to making their schools successful.

The results will be used to feed into The Learning Trust’s new Success in the Making campaign to attract more great teachers and other staff to Hackney.

Guests included chair of the Trust Richard Hardie, House of Lords representative Baroness Howells, Lord and Lady Mitchell, TV Presenter Rianna Scipio and actor Mark Wingett. Motivational speakers Action Jackson and Alim Kamara were also on hand to encourage students to aim for success by believing in themselves and working hard.

Trailblazer students are nominated by their schools for ‘breaking barriers and achieving excellence’. The programme is now in its fifth year.
