Newly Qualified Teachers (NQTs)

As a NQT you have studied and experienced the latest teaching methods, National Curriculum initiatives and a variety of teaching environments. You have developed skills and knowledge and will have had opportunities to display these in your placements.

Now that it’s time to put it all together and become a fully-fledged member of the teaching community, you’ll find Hackney is the perfect place to begin your career. If you are educated to degree level in Education or hold a PGCE and have Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) either in the UK or if not in your own country a desire to achieve QTS, skills, enthusiasm, drive and commitment then you’re the kind of NQT we want to hear from.

We run an annual pool system for the 53 primary schools in Hackney which begins in December, when we start visiting recruitment fairs, and ends in February. This year’s cycle has ended; however keep an eye on the news and events page for the latest developments. As we do not run a pool system for our secondary schools, you can apply for suitable roles by visiting the secondary schools jobs page .

The Learning Trust primary teaching induction programme

When you join a Hackney primary school you will receive a thorough induction which will ensure you get the best possible start in your new career.  All newly qualified teachers are invited to an initial ‘welcome day’ in September which will give you the opportunity to meet other new entrants and to hear about the range of resources and support available.

The induction programme for new entrants to teaching takes place throughout the year and includes a sweep of courses aimed at reinforcing the skills you have acquired during your training at university or on the job (GTP), as well as enhancing your own personal development.

What does the induction programme look like?

To begin with, you will be assigned an induction tutor who will support you through your first year teaching, provide general information about the school and introduce you to colleagues and other important people involved in school life. You and your Induction Tutor will sit down and work out what your training needs are (in line with the aims of the school and specific to the setting) and then book you onto courses that best meet your needs.  A programme of courses will be made available to you when you start work, but examples of courses include: Positive Behaviour & Relationship Management, What Makes Good Teaching, QFT AfL/Effective Marking & Feedback, etc.

In addition to training your lessons will be observed as this is an important part of developing your teaching skills and as such a number of teachers throughout your induction will observe your lessons and provide you with feedback and support to address any skills gaps.  An assessment of need arising from your Career Entry Development Profile (CEDP) forms the basis of your first classroom observation.

During your induction you will be given the opportunity to visit other schools. This provides a valuable opportunity to look at teachers working in different environments and will help you identify fresh ways of approaching particular tasks.

Visiting other classes within your own school is also an essential part of continuing professional development because it offers an opportunity to see other teaching situations and other teachers at work. Watching colleagues can provide an insight into performance in the classroom. Induction tutors will give guidance in identifying teachers and schools to visit.

What else should I know?

As an NQT you are entitled to a reduced timetable of no more than 90% of that of a main scale teacher in the same school.  This is in addition to any PPA time normally given to all other teachers.

As a newly qualified teacher you may be eligible for the Key Workers’ Scheme. Further information can be found at http://www.housingoptions.co.uk/ho2/
